Engineering Careers - Singapore

Singapore is undoubtedly one of the world’s most exotic destinations. It is an independent island-nation which also happens to be the world’s smallest. If you consider that it is the world’s sixth wealthiest country in terms of Gross Domestic Product against the size of the population, it is indeed a nation which begs one’s interest.

Wherever you go on the main island, you’re assured of a wonderful landscape speaks of the wealth which has deserved it a place amongst the Four Asian Tigers, the other three being Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan. Four countries which have been singled out for their rapid economical and infrastructural development during the late 20th century.

Singapore provides visitors with an experience unlike any other. Not only is the there a wonderful mix of old colonial architecture set amidst the striking new buildings and design masterpieces which are continually being built, but the nation’s location on the Malaysian Peninsula affords it a tropical rainforest climate. The countries skyline has changed considerably over the years and growth and development continue at some pace. Consequently Engineering Careers are available in a number of specialist fields.

With its attractive trade and tax laws, the welcoming nation has become home to many international corporations. It is one of the world’s leading electronics, chemical and petroleum exporters. These exports make up the lion’s share of the country’s revenue. The manufacture of pharmaceuticals is a large portion of the country’s industry. Companies like GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer have large manufacturing facilities in Singapore and millions upon millions of dollars have been allocated to research, development and infrastructure in order to maximize the potential of the country’s biotechnology industry.

Along with the biotechnology industry, the traditional technology industry remains strong, although there is a noticeable lack of skilled professionals able to bring it up par with the aggressively pursued chemical industry. Opportunities for skilled professionals and qualified engineers abound in each sector.

While the country is well known for its record employment statistics, there is a downside to this which impacts on productivity and, ultimately, the economy. The problem being that unemployment is so low simply because there aren’t enough people to fill the many available position. In effect, the sustained success of the economy relies on foreign nationals coming to work.

For those who take up the challenge and seek the tropical shores of this inspiring island-nation, they couldn’t be in for a more rewarding experience. The long established tradition of multi-culturalism assures most visitors a warm welcome. As long as the few customs and laws are observed, there is little to worry about. Even language won’t be a problem, since English is taught at schools and spoken everywhere.
